Fire Residue

Home – Fire Residue

Fire, Smoke & Soot Contamination.

Soot or particulate that “looks like soot” can be found in all structures, even those that have never sustained a fire loss. A baseline component of soot is especially likely to be present in urban structures, older structures, restaurants, hygienically compromised environments, and structures with wood burning stoves, for example.

IAQ can evaluate for (a) particulate that “looks like soot”, using a common analytical technique, or (b) particulate that absolutely is soot with a determination of the likely origin. Sometimes the common analytical technique is sufficient. But, imagine an industrial fire in a building that is laden with pre-existing residue IAQ can determine if and where the event-related residue is located.

IAQ can provide an expert assessment and protocol of structure, contents, and mechanical systems pursuant to the evaluation of site-specific causes, sources, and pathways of contamination with detailed recommendations for mitigation. The protocol can address the personal protection, containment, restoration, and completion procedures that the restoration contractor can follow to achieve the objective.

POST RESTORATION TESTING

Following mitigation, IAQ can perform “clearance” testing and inspection to evaluate the effectiveness of the protocols. Also, if there are complaints of residual smoke odor after restoration is complete, IAQ can perform (a) inspection, (b) surface/bulk testing, and/or (c) air testing (to evaluate for airborne compounds that are consistent with the presence of “smoke odor”).

“Legacy Benefit” to these Services

By utilizing the expertise of IAQ Management Services, Inc., you can be provided the following:

  • Proper handling of regulated materials.
  • Proper cleaning methods of soot – based upon the unique characteristics of the soot from the fire event.
  • Proper cleaning scope of the soot from the fire event.
  • Distinction of event-related (for which you are responsible) versus ongoing or pre-existing contamination.
  • Assessment of restoration effectiveness.
